Job Description
Our Painters are responsible for coating parts to customer specifications. Painters select and apply paint in one of our industrial spray booths and may apply touch-up manually as needed. Careful attention to detail and complete safety & environmental procedure compliance are essential in this role.

Essential Functions

  • Follows established work instructions and safety procedures including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and the use, storage, and disposition of hazardous materials
  • Performs routine equipment inspections and immediately addresses leaks, spills, or other issues, escalating concerns to Supervisor and/or Maintenance personnel; may perform and/or assist with preventive maintenance tasks or troubleshooting
  • Prepares parts and sets up and operates painting equipment to apply primers, colors, and finish coatings; operates exhaust equipment and auxiliary machines or equipment used in painting processes
  • Selects paint according to Company requirements, accurately matches paint colors using specified color charts; mixes paint and stirs or thins paints using spatulas and/or power mixing equipment
  • Loads product into spray equipment, and adjusts nozzles and paint mix settings to ensure proper paint flow and coating thickness
  • Verifies paint consistency using a viscosity meter
  • Performs test runs to ensure that equipment is set up properly
  • Monitors painting operations to identify flaws such as blisters and streaks; corrects flaws and adjusts equipment to prevent recurrence
  • Disassembles, cleans, and reassembles sprayers and power equipment using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties
  • Determines coating quality by performing visual inspections and/ or by using viscometers or other gauges to measure coating thickness
  • Records operational data on specified forms or spreadsheets and complies with quality standards and documentation requirements
  • Uses cranes and other lifting and moving devices to rotate or move equipment and materials so that surfaces to be painted are accessible
  • Uses brushes to paint by hand areas that cannot be adequately reached with a spray gun or areas requiring touch-up
  • Performs any other duties as required
  • Regular attendance on-site at the workplace is required
Required Education and Work Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Two (2) years experience in industrial painting is required
Other Required Skills and Abilities
  • Experience reading & accurately interpreting shop blueprints, sketches, specifications, and other technical information/instructions is required
  • Demonstrated basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, fraction conversions)
  • Experience using mics, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring equipment is required
  • Completion of assigned internal training for Painters and periodic retraining or recertification is required
Physical Demands and Work Environment
To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties
  • Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 100 pounds using peer assistance and/or other lifting & material-handling equipment
  • Frequently reaches overhead and reaches out or down to perform duties
  • Frequently climb steps, stairs, or ladders
  • Frequently bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
  • Frequently uses hand or fingers to manually inspect parts and operate sprayers and other machine and material handling controls
  • Accurately distinguish colors to select and apply correct paints
  • Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices
  • Wears dust mask, respirator, and other PPE as required; pulmonary capacity testing may be required for respirator use
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee will be exposed to:
  • Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
  • Dust, smoke, mist, fumes/vapors (regularly)
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
  • Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment (continually)
The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, respiratory protection, and use of safety footwear is required
